If you’re planning a move in or around the Austin area, you’re probably wondering how much it will cost to hire professional movers. The short answer is: it depends. At The Moving Kings, we provide transparent, customized pricing based on the specific needs of each move—whether you’re relocating across the street or to another city in Texas.
Here’s a breakdown of how we calculate moving costs and what actually affects the price of your move.
⸻
How We Price Our Moves at The Moving Kings
We offer two types of pricing depending on the move:
Hourly Rate
Most of our moves are billed by the hour. This applies to all types of relocations—including large homes, smaller houses, apartments, townhomes, and commercial moves. The total cost is based on the number of movers, the size of the crew, and the total time required to complete your move—from the moment we arrive at your pickup location until the last item is unloaded and reassembled at your new location.
Please note: We do not offer flat quotes for apartment moves. Hourly pricing is standard for apartments and smaller homes.
All hourly jobs include a two-hour minimum charge, plus a one-time travel fee based on distance.
Our all-inclusive hourly rate covers:
• A 26’ fully equipped truck
• Professional movers
• Wrapping furniture with blankets and stretch wrap
• Disassembly and reassembly of furniture
• Loading, unloading, and furniture placement
We also offer packing services billed at the same hourly rate. When we pack, we bring professional-grade packing supplies, including boxes, packing paper, and bubble wrap—materials which are available at cost (we do not profit from packing materials). However, we do not sell boxes or supplies separately for customers to use on their own. Our packing materials are only available as part of our full-service packing.
Included at no additional cost with your move:
• Moving blankets
• Plastic wrap
• Tape
• Queen and king mattress bags
⸻
Flat Quote (Available for 4-Bedroom Homes or Larger)
For larger homes—typically 4 bedrooms or more—we offer a free in-home estimate. This allows us to evaluate the size and scope of the move and provide a flat quote based on the estimated labor hours. This option is ideal for clients who prefer to know the total cost upfront. That said, many large home moves are also completed under our hourly rate model when preferred.
⸻
What Actually Affects the Cost of a Move?
Some clients assume that the distance between homes is the biggest factor—but when you’re moving within the Austin area, the drive time is often the least significant part of the job.
For example, moving from a home that is 5 minutes away versus 25 minutes away may only add about 20 minutes of additional drive time. What truly determines the total duration—and therefore the cost—are tasks like:
• Disassembly and wrapping of furniture
• Packing items into boxes (if requested)
• Careful loading and unloading
• Unwrapping and reassembly of items
For long-distance moves within Texas—such as from Austin to Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio—the travel time is a more substantial factor. In those cases, our travel fee is adjusted to reflect the extended round-trip driving time for our crew and trucks.
⸻
Every Move Is Different—Even With the Same Number of Rooms
A 4-bedroom house with minimal furniture, packed boxes, and easy access may take far less time than another 4-bedroom house full of fragile items, furniture that needs wrapping and disassembly, and difficult access (such as stairs or a steep driveway). That’s why we don’t provide generic pricing based solely on the number of rooms.
Our hourly rate reflects the actual time and labor required for your move, and our experienced movers work efficiently to minimize time without sacrificing care.
⸻
Packing Services Available
If you need help packing your belongings into boxes, our team can handle that too. We offer full-service packing at the same hourly rate as moving, and we supply all necessary materials. Our professional packers are trained to handle everything from kitchenware and clothing to fragile décor and artwork.
While we provide packing materials such as boxes, paper, and bubble wrap at cost, we do not sell these items separately for customers to use on their own. Materials are only provided as part of our packing service.
⸻
Do Prices Change Based on the Season?
Yes. Like most moving companies, our rates can vary depending on the time of year. During peak moving season—especially summer months, weekends, and end-of-month dates—demand increases and availability is limited. Booking in advance is the best way to secure your date and avoid premium rates.
